What U Means
La Cornue’s manual uses the [U] symbol for two different normal functions on the same display: the pan detector, shown when a cooking zone is switched on with no pan present or a pan unsuited to induction, and the "Keep Warm" low-temperature setting, shown when the control knob is turned just past zero. Neither is an error.
Common Causes of U
- No pan on an activated cooking zone
- A pan present but not induction-compatible (glass, ceramic, unclad aluminum or non-magnetic stainless steel, per the manual’s own list) or too small for the zone
- The control knob turned into the Keep Warm range rather than a numbered power level
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
If [U] appears as the pan detector, the manual says to place a flat-bottomed, induction-compatible pan of adequate diameter, centered on the cooking zone; the symbol clears once the hob detects it. If a cooking zone was turned to its Keep Warm position on purpose, [U] is expected there and is not a problem to fix.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Confirming the pan and its position on the zone, or the knob position, is a normal check, not a repair, and needs no parts or tools.
