Gas tops are mechanically simple and that is good news: an igniter, a burner cap and crown, a gas tap and the orifice sized for your gas type. The one that catches people out is the orifice. A range converted from natural gas to propane, or moved between properties, will burn badly until the correct orifices are fitted, and the signs — yellow flame, poor simmer, sooting — read exactly like a worn burner.
Induction zones and the French plaque fail differently, electrically rather than mechanically, and both are worth diagnosing before ordering anything, because the control board and the zone itself present almost the same sign from the cook’s side of the appliance.
